As the final seconds ticked off the clock in Michigan’s first national title since 1989, fans went nuts and immediately took to social media to celebrate. Other fans, and famous alums take to social media to talk about Michigan State just seconds after their team just won a national championship.
Famous pizza reviewer — and owner and founder of Barstool — Dave Portnoy is one of the most outspoken Michigan alums out there and he always seems to have something to say about “little brother”.
While Michigan players were cutting down the nets and hoisting the national title trophy, Portnoy was on Twitter posting a new merch drop dedicated to the Wolverines’ championship — sort of.
He just couldn’t go a day without talking about “little brother” Michigan State.

The first one he posted was with four three other t-shirts celebrating the Michigan title, and it showed Dusty May holding the national title trophy while stepping over Izzo. He clearly wanted to show that he’s very much not little brother by posting the shirt again for sale without the trophy. Two different t-shirt ideas dedicated to trolling the Spartans mere seconds after the final buzzer.
But hey, we’re little brother and he’s totally not obsessed with Michigan State.
Michigan fans, check on your Michigan State friends
It’s been a tough past year for Michigan State basketball fans. Not only did the Spartans lose in the Elite Eight after winning the Big Ten last year, but they lost Tre Holloman, Xavier Booker, and Jase Richardson somewhat unexpectedly (the latter two more so unexpected given preseason expectations) and then they added a handful of new portal players that were expected to have a much larger impact but two suffered season-ending injuries and another struggled.
The Spartans weren’t expected to win the Big Ten again, but they exceeded expectations, winning 27 games and finishing tied for second in the conference standings.
Unfortunately, their biggest rival was dominant from start to finish this season. Michigan pretty much just ran through its schedule on the way to a national title. They concluded with a 69-63 win over a UConn team that many thought should have lost to Michigan State.
What could have been.
It was a dream season for Michigan, and if I were a Wolverine fan, I’d be celebrating in the streets all night and you know that work is going to be less than productive for the rest of the week. It was a nightmare for Michigan State because that means the Spartans can no longer say that they were the last Big Ten team to win the national title.
It’s been tough to see Dusty May do what Tom Izzo has been trying to do since the first one back in 2000. Spartan fans are hoping that this motivates a run next year to Detroit. That would be a trade-off that I think every Michigan State fan in existence would take — a Michigan national title now and Michigan State in the Detroit Final Four next year.
I mean, we have no choice at this point.
