While Pat Fitzgerald is teasing transfer commitments seemingly 5-6 times a day now, Michigan State is also working on returning some key players for 2026.

The Spartans lost one of my favorite offensive linemen on Monday when Rustin Young announced that he was entering the portal, and Nick Marsh, Michael Masunas, and Alex VanSumeren have all already found new homes.

Michigan State’s new head coach has identified the most important players on the roster that he’d like to return in 2026, and one of them just announced the good news.

About a week ago, Michigan State lost potential WR1 Chrishon McCray to the transfer portal as he was in East Lansing for just one season.

On Tuesday night, news broke that the junior wideout from Kent State would be withdrawing his name from the portal and returning to Michigan State.

Absolutely huge news for Michigan State and projected QB1 Alessio Milivojevic.

Chrishon McCray has a chance to be Michigan State’s WR1

After spending last season as the second or third option for Aidan Chiles and eventually Milivojevic, McCray thought it was in his best interest to leave Michigan State for a program with a more stable situation for him.

And after thinking it over with the people closest to him, he decided to return.

The withdrawal news is huge not only because McCray gives Michigan State legit proven depth in the receiver room, but because he has a chance to be the team’s go-to target with a better offensive situation in front of him.

Nick Sheridan was hired as the new offensive coordinator, and there’s plenty of hope that he’ll be a step up (or more) from Brian Lindgren.

If that is truly the case, he’ll be in line to get plenty more targets in an offense led by a quarterback that looked like the future at the end of 2025. On the year, McCray had just 24 catches for 330 yards and three touchdowns, but in his final two games, he had eight receptions for 99 yards and two scores.

The talent is there, and with a better offensive coordinator and quarterback, he could take that next step and become Michigan State’s WR1.
