Sure it would be some great news for a player like Carson Cooper to get the benefit of a fifth season for Michigan State basketball. It doesn't seem likely unless the NCAA passes a rule soon, but even if it doesn't work out, Cooper — along with Jaxon Kohler — has plenty of basketball ahead of him.
Both players will head to Portsmouth, Va., for the annual Portsmouth Invitational. It gives both an opportunity to play at the NBA pace, along with trying to perform for potential scouts, as they both look to continue playing ball at the pro level.
It isn't the first time MSU basketball has had players partake in the event. Famously Matt Costello had a strong performance at the event that led to his chance with the San Antonio Spurs’ G-League team.
This will mark the third straight year that Spartan players will be featured in the event as Tyson Walker and AJ Hoggard both played in 2024, while Jaden Akins partook in the Invitational last season.
Now Cooper and Kohler will both have a showcase event to show off one more time.
Kohler will team up with some very familiar names including Purdue's Trey Kaufman-Renn and rival and national champion Nimari Burnett from Michigan. That teams also features Seth Trimble from North Carolina along with Felix Okpara from Tennessee. A solid group.

As for Cooper, he gets to play alongside USC's Ezra Ausar which makes for a strong post duo.
Cooper and Kohler faced other on Thursday evening, which was a fun matchup for the duo. Cooper finished with six points and seven rebounds in 23 minutes while Kohler had five points and eight rebounds in 20 minutes — Cooper’s team picked up the win.
The Invitational runs through Saturday.
