Michigan State suffered its first loss of the season a little over a week ago in East Lansing against No. 4 Duke and freshman sensation Cam Boozer.

The Spartans were able to neutralize Boozer in the first half, holding him to just two points, and he became the subject of some harsh chants. As Jeremy Fears Jr. was at the free throw line in the first half and with momentum on Michigan State’s side, the Izzone started a chant that had the entire Breslin Center crowd seemingly joining in.

The Izzone started a “F**k Cam Boozer” chant that echoed throughout the arena, and it got Fears pumped up as he encourage the hate toward his opponent.

That led to a timeout and everyone calmed down, but it was still one of the more memorable moments from the game — especially for Boozer himself.

Appearing on ‘The Brotherhood’ podcast recently, Boozer was asked what his favorite moment from the early part of the season has been so far, and he immediately laughed and brought up the chants that were directed at him by the Breslin Center crowd.

His reaction to the chants was pretty funny: “What did I do?”

It is true that Boozer didn’t do anything specifically to ignite these chants, especially with him playing poorly in the first half, but it was meant to get in his head. Unfortunately, it had the opposite effect as it just fired him up in the second half to score 16 points in the final 20 minutes to take over the game and lead Duke to a huge road win.

Michigan State’s Izzone strikes again

There’s a reason opposing players hate playing at the Breslin Center, and it’s because the Izzone is one of the best, and most ruthless, student sections in college basketball.

Boozer just got the latest taste of that hostility.

Michigan State is usually very good at home, and Duke’s win over the Spartans a little over a week ago was one of the rare occasions that they have lost at home in non-conference play under Tom Izzo. The Izzone is usually a huge factor and it’s led to a lot of key wins.

Unfortunately, that Duke loss was the result of some crumbling against zone defense down the stretch as the Spartans gave it away. Still, the Izzone has been great this season and it feels like it’s been back to being elite for the past couple of years.

I’m not sure that Izzo loved the “F Cam Boozer” chants as much as Boozer himself, though.
