Entering spring ball, there was one player that I was excited to follow. Cam Edwards came over as a running back transfer from UConn, and while the last one kind of fell short of expectations at Michigan State due to a lackluster offensive line and coaching staff, the excitement level is different this time.
I’ll admit, I was all aboard the Nate Carter bandwagon and he clearly had enough talent because he was signed to the Atlanta Falcons’ 53-man roster last offseason as an undrafted rookie.
This UConn running back transfer will be in a much more stable situation. I don’t forsee Pat Fitzgerald having the same issues that Mel Tucker, Harlon Barnett, and Jonathan Smith had on the field, and that includes in the trenches. I expect the offensive line to be a strength.
What does that mean? It means that you need to buy copious amounts of stock in the redshirt senior from UConn who just rushed for 1,000 yards as a junior.
To me, Edwards is almost a sure thing to break out in the green and white.
Cam Edwards should be Michigan State’s next 1,000-yard rusher
During spring ball, Edwards said that he wants to be the best running back in the Big Ten and with the improved offensive line that I see taking shape in front of him, I believe it’s possible.
OK, so the conference’s top contenders all have four and five-star running backs manning their backfields, but Edwards has experience as a 1,000-yard rusher in the FBS and he was named third-team All-Group of Five last season.
Edwards was raved about all spring and it’s hard not to get excited about a guy who averaged 5.9 yards per carry and had over 1,200 yards and 15 touchdowns with a mediocre Group of Five team. I can only imagine how good he’s going to be behind an even better offensive line. I believe that Edwards is about to become what we all thought Carter was going to be.
I’m not saying that Edwards is going to be Kenneth Walker III reincarnated, but I believe that he is going to be the first 1,000-yards rusher in East Lansing since K9.
And when Michigan State has success on the ground, it wins games.
Edwards has me buying stock in him as a player and over 3.5 wins.
