While his former collegiate team, Michigan State hockey, continues to reign atop the National polls, Artyom Levshunov has been trying to make some noise in pro hockey.
The 2023-24 Big Ten freshman and defensive player of the year didn't stay for his sophomore season after going second overall to the Chicago Blackhawks.
Sure he hasn't gotten called up to the NHL yet, but Arty is starting to make great progress with the Blackhawks' AHL affiliate. He has been a key piece on the Rockford Icehogs blueline.
In 25 games played with the Hogs, Levshunov leads all defensemen with 72 shots on goal. Even with that high shot rate, he has only scored two goals thus far. Still, the native of Belarus is starting to find his groove.
His two goals and eight assists this season bring his total to 10 points in 25 games. The Blackhawks could use Levshunov on defense right about now, as they currently sit at the bottom of the league with 26 points. They certainly look destined for another high pick for the third straight season.
Chicago took Connor Bedard with the first pick in 2023, and then Levshunov second in 2024. It will be interesting to see if he will get a look with the Blackhawks this season.
Levshunov has always been a tough and gritty playmaker, which was no different at Michigan State. It was very clear why he went second overall. He is still only 19, so sticking out the whole season with the IceHogs probably isn't a bad choice.
If and when he does make his debut, hopefully he will become memorable like another former Spartan great defenseman who played in Chicago in Duncan Keith. That is a lot to live up to given Keith helped Chicago win three Stanley Cups.
Regardless, it's great to hear Arty is making some noise this season.
