Another ideal transfer big option for Michigan State has entered the portal

I swear I won’t do this every time I see a new transfer big that would fit MSU.

Tom Izzo will undoubtedly be scouring the transfer portal this offseason looking for a big man or two who could come in and play starter’s minutes for Michigan State at the power forward or center spots.

That’s not exactly an easy task considering all the money that’s been flying around because of NIL over the past few years. The Spartans have landed transfers, but this offseason they’re going to need one that can start and play big minutes in the post because there’s an obvious hole in the frontcourt with Jaxon Kohler and Carson Cooper graduating.

Izzo needs a center even though he does have five-star big man Ethan Taylor coming in to go along with Jesse McCulloch and Cam Ward in the frontcourt. Four-star power forward Julius Avent and Coen Carr will be able to play the four, too, but there’s too much unproven talent down low.

I expect Ward and McCulloch to both take healthy steps in the right direction, but that doesn’t change the fact that they’re both unproven and a starting center is probably the most important offseason addition.

One of those starting-caliber center options just hit the portal on Monday.

Sebastian Rancik has entered the portal after two seasons with Colorado, and he fits the exact description of what Izzo will be looking for this offseason: he’s got size (6-foot-11, 220 pounds), he has plenty to learn and room to grow, he can average 12 and 8, he has multiple years of eligibility left, and he can shoot (33 percent from three).

The only area that I think Rancik could afford to improve in is his defense. He had just 22 blocks over two seasons with Colorado (0.4 per game). He did averaged 12.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.

Tom Izzo is going to have to spend some money this offseason

If Michigan State is going to next year’s Final Four in Detroit, Izzo is going to have to spend some money, and not just on his transfer portal additions.

These days, in order to keep a roster intact, you need to spend big money. The Spartans want to keep this roster together, for the most part, so you can bet that Izzo will need to spend big to keep Jeremy Fears Jr. and Coen Carr on the team — though I don’t see them wanting to leave. Guys like Kur Teng, Jordan Scott, Cam Ward, Divine Ugochukwu, and Kaleb Glenn may also draw outside interest.

Spending to keep the roster in check is essentially how Izzo uses the portal, but he’s going to have to add 1-2 bigs this offseason to become a legitimate national title contender next season.

I’ve been seeing really good center fits enter their names into the portal every single day, and Rancik is just the latest. Having a big guy who can stretch the floor, rebound, run, and has multiple years of eligbility left would just make too much sense for Izzo and Co.
