This past week was a nightmare for Michigan State football.

The Spartans came to an agreement with the NCAA that would put them on probation for three years, vacate all the wins from 2022-2024, and reduce some recruiting visits and contacts. It was a harsh punishment for a program whose former head coach was responsible for playing ineligible players, and one rolled over into the first year of Jonathan Smith, without him knowing.

Michigan State then lost on Saturday to a Penn State team that was also 0-6 in Big Ten play, falling to 3-7 on the season. Smith also finds himself on the hot seat, likely to be fired at season’s end because of his lack of progress throughout the past two seasons.

It can’t be that desirable to coach at a program experiencing sanctions until 2028, losing some official visits with other recruiting reductions, and hasn’t made a bowl game since 2021.

However, that’s not the truth, according to one source.

FootballScoop, which is well-connected in the football landscape, spoke to an agent earlier this week and asked if coaches would still be interested in the Michigan State job despite the sanctions and current state of the program.

That agent’s response: ”100%”.

While it may seem like the sky is falling and nothing is going right for Michigan State, there’s still plenty of interest from potential coaching candidates.

Let’s stop acting like this program doesn’t deserve good things — other coaches see it as a desirable coaching spot. Michigan State is a top 25 program all-time, so let’s start acting like it.
