Happy spring game day, everyone. While the annual Michigan State football spring “game” is now called the spring showcase, it’s still an exciting time for fans to get a sneak peek at the new squad.

The Spartans are ushering in a new era with Pat Fitzgerald and the excitement is starting to build. It’s been a quick spring, but that just means the 2026 season is going to be here before we know it. Spartan fans are dying to root for a good football program again.

What should everyone be watching for during Fitzgerald’s first spring showcase in East Lansing?

1. Attendance

Since this isn’t an actual scrimmage and more of an open practice with some live snaps taking place at some point, I feel like one of the most important storylines will be the crowd.

Over the past few years, the spring game has lost its luster and that might have something to do with it veering away from an actual scrimmage but it was mostly due to Michigan State putting a pretty mediocre product on the field. I’m interested to see if Fitzgerald really is returning the energy to the program and we’ll be able to tell the excitement level for the new era by the attendance numbers.

Yes, this is kind of a lame thing to watch, but it’ll show just how much juice Fitzgerald has.

2. Position battles in the trenches

Fitzgerald admitted earlier this week that Michigan State doesn’t have many “sure” starters outside of the obvious like Alessio Milivojevic and Jordan Hall. That means that fans will get to take in several key position battles on both sides of the ball. To me, the trenches are the most important.

Seeing who stands out on both the offensive and defensive lines will give fans a better idea of what to expect in the trenches this season.

The offensive line is struggling a bit to stay healthy through spring ball, so whoever is out there taking snaps with the ones will probably have the upper hand until fall camp. The same goes for the defensive line which has been disappointing for years. I think Winston DeLattiboudere II is going to do some special things in East Lansing. That starts on Saturday.

3. Cam Edwards

A lot of talk this spring has been about Cam Edwards and it seems like everyone is predicting a breakout season for the UConn running back transfer.

Edwards himself said that he wants to be the best running back in the Big Ten, and I think he’s more than capable of being one of the best in the conference. I’ll be curious to see what the hype is all about and if there is a scrimmage at some point, we’ll see what kind of workload he gets. Will he be splitting snaps evenly with the other running back transfers as well as Brandon Tullis and Jace Clarizio.

Edwards projects to be the new RB1, but will he have more of a Kenneth Walker III-type impact or Nate Carter one?
