If you weren't willing to pay $8 to the University of Connecticut and didn't have time to tune in to Will Tieman on the radio broadcast, you probably had no idea what was happening in Tuesday night's exhibition finale between UConn and Michigan State basketball.

The Huskies took the Spartans down 76-69, but the final was a lot closer than the actual contest.

UConn was up by as much as 17 in the second half, but the Spartans clawed their way back into the game and finished strong.

What'd we learn from Michigan State's loss to UConn?

1. The offense is a little disjointed right now

I believe I mentioned this in the Bowling Green post-game piece, but Michigan State is going to need some time to really gel together. The Spartans looked a bit disjointed and clunky offensively, shooting just 39 percent from the field, 29 percent from deep, and 66 percent from the line.

Yuck.

The fact that this was just a 7-point loss with those numbers is actually surprising and impressive. The Spartans have to get going offensively, but more time together should cure that.

2. Trey Fort is the starting 2-guard right now

If it wasn't obvious in the first exhibition game against Bowling Green, it is now. Trey Fort is the best option for Michigan State at the shooting guard spot.

Kur Teng looked a little uncomfortable out there, going 0-for-4 from the floor and 0-for-3 from deep with just two points in 12 minutes while Fort was hitting threes and driving the lane. The Spartans will obviously need to get Teng going, but Fort is the better option right now.

3. Free throws have been an early problem

Michigan State didn't shoot the ball all that well from the stripe in the exhibition opener against Bowling Green and the Spartans had the same problem on Tuesday night at UConn. They finished 29-of-44 from the charity stripe which just isn't going to cut it when the non-conference slate starts to heat up.

The Spartans were a great free throw shooting team last year, maybe this team is just shaking off some rust. Coen Carr shouldn't be shooting 2-for-7 from the stripe.

But hey, they're making it to the line a lot. Little victories.
