If you predicted that Michigan would lose its head coach at this point in the offseason with just months until the 2026-27 season begins, you either had inside info or you’re psychic. No one thought that Dusty May was going to leave for the NBA after missing out on the Bulls and Magic jobs.
Michigan State fans are completely fine with this news.
Dusty took over at Michigan a couple of years ago and led the Wolverines to a national title this past season which really crushed a lot of Spartan fans who had been waiting 26 years for Tom Izzo to win No. 2. Now that he’s gone, Michigan could take a step back even with the roster that was constructed to compete for back-to-back national titles.
There’s even a chance that the Wolverines take an even larger hit when the transfer portal window opens for the roster which happens directly after a coaching change takes place.
If Michigan does lose anyone to the transfer portal, Spartan fans should hope that it’s one of the three guys below.
Moustapha Thiam, C
Moustapha Thiam is a player who I wanted at Michigan State and if the Spartans didn’t land Anton Bonke to take up that lost open spot on the roster, I’d be begging Izzo to go after him when their transfer portal window opens for the Wolverines. He’s one of the best incoming transfer big men in the country and he has serious NBA potential. I can see him being a first-rounder next year.
Without Thiam, Michigan’s frontcourt would be a shell of itself next season.
Trey McKenney, G
I’ve been pretty vocal about Trey McKenney being a guy who I believe could become the most annoying Michigan player in quite some time just because of how consistent he was as a true freshman. The first-year guard nearly became a Spartan and now he’s one of the best players on one of the top national title contenders in the country.
McKenney has the potential to be a thorn in Michigan State’s side for the next year-plus, so I wouldn’t mind if he decided to leave the Big Ten altogether.
Brandon McCoy, SG
There’s a decent chance that Brandon McCoy ends up being the most talented player on Michigan’s roster this season, but the five-star freshman will have some growing pains. Either way, getting the most gifted player off the roster would be a dream scenario for the Spartans. McCoy is going to be an NBA player as soon as 2027 and it’d be nice if he didn’t haunt the Spartans this season.
