Michigan State basketball is looking to close the opening weekend of the NCAA Tournament on a high note with a win over New Mexico to advance to the Sweet 16.
That's going to take a near-perfect effort as the Lobos are one of the toughest mid-majors in the country, led by one of the nation's top guards. Donovan Dent is going to require all hands on deck on Sunday night and fortunately, the Spartans have the defenders to get the job done.
Richard Pitino and the Lobos aren't going to go down without a fight.
Let's dive into some of the boldest predictions for Sunday's big game.
1. Michigan State shoots 50 percent from deep
While Michigan State has one of the worst 3-point shooting teams in the country this season, the Spartans do have shooters like Jaden Akins, Jase Richardson, and Tre Holloman.
And they've all been shooting better in recent games. They made almost 40 percent of their threes against Bryant and I expect an even better result against a so-so New Mexico defense.
They're going to all shoot the ball well on Sunday night, leading to a 50-plus-percent mark from distance. Michigan State will finish the game 11-for-21 from deep, really opening some eyes around the country.
2. MSU out-rebounds New Mexico by 10+
New Mexico is one of the top rebounding teams in the country, grabbing nearly 40 per game and ranking in the top 30 nationally. Michigan State, too, prides itself on rebounding. Something's got to give here.
Michigan State is going to flex its muscle and dominate on the glass like a patented Izzo team, beating the Lobos by at least 10 on the boards.
3. Another second-half surge, cover
As has been the case all season, Michigan State will get off to an OK start, flirting with ties and lead changes all first half before taking a small lead into halftime. Then, in the second half, Michigan State will pull ahead by five-plus and then really pour it on, eventually covering the 6.5-point spread and winning by double figures.
Michigan State will have a two-point lead at the half and it will win by 12.
