Michigan State basketball suffered its first loss of the season as it fell 89-88 to Tennessee at the Breslin Center on Sunday night.

No, this game didn’t count and it was for charity, but it was still a good test for the Spartans early in the season and it’s undoubtedly going to help this team moving forward. Getting a real test before the season officially starts gives you a leg up on the competition.

The Spartans got to face the No. 9 team in the nation with no consequences for losing. That’s huge.

Despite the loss, it was an impressive showing for Michigan State after a forgettable first few minutes when it fell behind 17-1. That start was the difference in this one. Well, that and a foul called on Michigan State in the final two seconds.

The Spartans learned a lot about themselves in this one.

Quick thoughts from Michigan State basketball’s loss

Here are some observations from Michigan State’s loss to Tennessee.

  • Tyson Walker is still that guy.
  • Jaden Akins looked like a more complete player.
  • Post play without Jaxon Kohler was underwhelming offensively.
  • Coen Carr is going to be fun to watch.
  • AJ Hoggard is clutch.
  • The defense has a ton of work to do.
  • The offensive side of the court is going to be dynamic and explosive.

Despite two late missed free throws from Tyson Walker, the Spartans didn’t have too many negatives on the offensive end of the court other than turnovers and that dreadful start.

Defending without fouling was an issue on the other end, especially late.

The Spartans begin their season on Nov. 6 against James Madison.
