Michigan State football: Power ranking head coaching candidates after Week 8
Another week is in the books and Michigan State football fans haven’t been this ready for a season to be over since 2016.
The Spartans were embarrassed on Saturday in East Lansing by rival Michigan to the tune of 49-0. It was one of those games that will always be etched in memories for all the wrong reasons. Michigan State just couldn’t do anything and it looked completely overmatched.
It’s time for a new head coach.
Let’s see how our weekly coaching candidate power rankings look ahead of Week 9.
Honorable mention: Sean Lewis, Chris Klieman, Brian Hartline
It’s been quite the drop for Charles Huff on my power rankings because, well, Marshall hasn’t looked very good in a few weeks and that’s problematic for a team that was supposed to compete in the Sun Belt this season.
In fact, Marshall has lost three straight games. The first was almost expected at NC State, but it was by only a touchdown. The next was a 17-point loss at Georgia State. And then finally this past weekend was a nightmarish offensive performance against undefeated James Madison at home, 20-9. That was enough to drop him from No. 1 on this list down to No. 5 in the span of a few weeks.
By all accounts, Huff is a good coach and has a history of being a solid recruiter at some elite programs. But was the recruiting elite only because he had the resources of an Alabama or a Penn State? Potentially. But he’s also a very young coach who seems to relate with his players.
I still like Huff, but the shine has worn off a bit on him as a candidate.
