Michigan State football: Reggie Powers’ decommitment a sign of things to come
Michigan State football fans are dealing with arguably the toughest stretch of fandom since the John L. Smith era.
Even during the darkest days of the Mark Dantonio era (excluding 2016), Michigan State still managed to make a bowl game. The Spartans missed a bowl game last season and it looks like they’re well on their way toward missing another.
Sure, there’s a lot of time left to turn things around, but without a head coach and players undoubtedly entering the portal following Mel Tucker’s firing, it doesn’t seem likely.
And on Tuesday night, Michigan State lost a commitment from one of its top 2024 pledges, four-star safety Reggie Powers. He chose the Spartans over Ohio State but it seems like the Ohio native may be rethinking that decision.
This is just the tip of the iceberg for the Spartans.
Michigan State football will soon see a mass exodus
We heard this past offseason from some college football “experts” that Michigan State experienced a “mass exodus” after losing Payton Thorne and Keon Coleman. That just wasn’t the case.
However, what we’re about to see in the coming weeks and months will absolutely be a mass exodus. Players and commits are going to be jumping ship left and right.
I’m not trying to be all doom and gloom, but we need to be prepared and be realistic.
The state of the program is not great. Michigan State football is currently in shambles, but that can be fixed quickly by the right coaching hire (looking at you, Charles Huff and Mike Elko). The right hire can get some departures to reconsider and can help flip guys from other programs.
Powers was the second decommitment in the past week and when Tucker is officially fired, we’re going to see more along with some transfers.
Buckle up, Spartan fans.
