Jay Johnson has a big task ahead of him. Michigan State football’s offensive coordinator had a rough 2022 season following an explosive 2021 and he’ll need to prove that the former was the outlier.

In order to do that, he’ll need to have his offense healthy unlike it was last season. He was rummaging through the roster just to find healthy bodies to take the field.

On top of that, there just needs to be depth throughout the roster.

On Monday, Johnson spoke to the media and actually praised the depth on offense and said that it’s the biggest difference this year than in his first three seasons with the program.

That seems to be a good sign.

It’s almost a universal talking point among MSU coaches that the roster is much deeper and more talented this year than it has been during the entire Mel Tucker era.

Depth is nice, but can Michigan State football stay healthy?

When speaking about depth, it’s obvious that Johnson was alluding to having more healthy bodies this year than in previous years as well. He has a depth chart full of guys who, if they can stay healthy, can be a problem for opposing defenses.

Last year, the offensive line suffered a plethora of injuries and it was never the same unit week to week. Also, guys like Jayden Reed and other key players suffered injuries that held the offense back.

Let’s hope that’s not the case in 2023.

Hearing Johnson gush over the depth on offense is intriguing because he’s not the first coach to say this. Tucker has stated multiple times that this is the best and deepest roster he’s had yet.

Hopefully that translates to a big season.
