The revelation of the new carbon variant Michigan State football helmets has me itching for the season. While we are still about a month away, football is on the forefront of all of our minds and the way this summer has gone, Week 1 will be here in the blink of an eye.

Obviously, my downtime has been filled with MSU highlights on YouTube and every single video has a small clip of a game where the team wore an alternate helmet, and every single time I say “Oh, what a great lid.”

This led me down a rabbit hole of all the helmets that the Spartan teams have worn over the past 20 years so I decided to rank the best five.

Spoiler alert: No neon.

5. Sparty carrying the American flag

It’s simple, but maybe that’s why it works so much. The best mascot in college sports holds the flag of the greatest country in the world. What more could you ask for?

Worn for the 27-21 victory over Rutgers in 2022, the helmet design was in honor of their Military Appreciation Game. It was met with overwhelmingly positive reviews when revealed the Thursday before the game.

I’m hoping to see this one against this year around the same time. I could also see the classic Spartan decal but with red, white, and blue, but this one was a certified hit.
