It feels like July was about 10 days long but that just means we are barreling headfirst towards Michigan State football kickoff in just a few short weeks.

But for now, here are the highlights of the month. Honorable mentions include Darien Harris getting a well-deserved promotion and he’s on the fast track to having an important role in everything Michigan State University has to offer, football or otherwise.

Also, without going into further detail, thank you to all the Spartan fans who behaved themselves on the Twitter.com last week.

3. Trae Waynes’ $500,000 gift

On July 28, it was announced that Trae Waynes and his wife had gifted the university a $500,000 donation to go toward the new Tom Izzo Football Building.

An extension of the Skandalaris Football Center, the building looks to improve the football facilities with up-to-date weight training, recovery/nutrition, locker rooms, and team chemistry elements. It’s these new features that impress recruits and make Michigan State a premier football school.

Waynes is a legend from the Mark Dantonio era and the cornerstone of the “No Fly Zone.” While only ranked as a three-star recruit, he ended his Spartans career with 101 tackles, six interceptions, and 13 passes defended all in just three years, culminating in being drafted 11th overall to the Minnesota Vikings. It’s just another great Spartan success story through great coaching, hard work, and dedication.

It acts like this that shows recruits and players that Michigan State alums are one huge family. He credits MSU with everything he has accomplished and it’s good to see athletic buildings happily funded by alumni instead of student tuition.
