The last thing anyone wants to talk about right now is sports, but unfortunately, there is a Michigan State basketball game that needs to be rescheduled — possibly two.

The Spartans were set to host Minnesota on Wednesday night, but a tragic campus shooting has canceled all campus events this week, and rightly so. That means the Minnesota game will need to be rescheduled for a later date.

But are there any later dates that are open for both teams before the Big Ten Tournament?

Let’s take a look at the possibilities for rescheduling a game that Michigan State arguably needs to happen more than Minnesota.

Potential makeup dates for Minnesota vs. Michigan State basketball

There aren’t a ton of open dates left from now until the start of the Big Ten Tournament on March 8 and it becomes especially tough to nail down a date with two teams playing on different days.

So here are the open dates for Michigan State on the remaining schedule:

  • Feb. 19-20
  • Feb. 22-24
  • Feb. 26-27
  • March 1-3

And here are the open dates for Minnesota:

  • Feb. 19-20
  • Feb. 21
  • Feb. 23-24
  • Feb. 26-March 1
  • March 3-4

As you can see, there aren’t many options for compatible makeup dates and no matter which one is chosen, one team is going to be playing a back-to-back.

Here are the common dates:

  • Feb. 19-20
  • Feb. 23-24
  • Feb. 26-27
  • March 3

There’s one very possible scenario that stands out and it’s the date right before Michigan State’s Senior Day on March 3. The Spartans are obviously home on March 4 so there would be no travel required for them and Minnesota has a day to travel back home before facing Wisconsin on March 5.

Minnesota does play a day prior against Rutgers on March 2 so that would make this a tough stretch, but the other common days off would require too much travel as it would be sandwiched between two road games.

It’s not looking great for a reschedule date, but if Michigan State and Minnesota want to get it done, there’s going to have to be a back-to-back for one of these teams. Tough sell.
