Should Michigan State football pursue Michigan WR transfer Andrel Anthony?

After a decent freshman season, highlighted by a breakout game against Michigan State football, Andrel Anthony looked poised to become that next go-to receiver for Michigan.

Spurning Michigan State for Michigan out of high school in 2021 despite looking like a Spartan lean for a while and growing up in East Lansing, Anthony was hoping to carve out a nice career in Ann Arbor but two years in, he didn’t like where he sat on the depth chart.

In fact, he had just seven catches for 80 yards as a sophomore as his numbers dipped drastically from his freshman campaign and he only had one catch for seven yards since Oct. 15.

But now that he’s back in the portal and Michigan State may be looking to add some receiver depth following the transfer of Germie Bernard to Washington, should the Spartans take another look at Anthony?

Anthony to Michigan State football doesn’t make a ton of sense

While I would have loved to land Anthony out of high school in East Lansing, I think the way he spurned the Spartans probably didn’t sit well with the staff.

Though I don’t think a bridge was necessarily burned, I don’t think Anthony has done enough in two years at Michigan to warrant interest from Courtney Hawkins and Michigan State’s receiver room. Anthony was the No. 5 or No. 6 receiver on the Wolverines and they didn’t exactly have a loaded corps this season.

Plus, if you add Anthony (who is already a stretch), you risk losing some young guys who will be vying for playing time this season like Antonio Gates Jr., Tyrell Henry, or Jaron Glover.

If Michigan State is going to target a receiver in the portal this offseason, it needs to be a potential WR1 like a Dont’e Thornton from Oregon. Anthony just doesn’t make a ton of sense.
