Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo isn’t shy about speaking his mind — good or bad.

Oftentimes, he’s being harsh on himself or his team for the way they played but he’ll occasionally express excitement for certain players and give honest, glowing opinions about some guys.

This week, he gave one of his positive reviews.

Izzo appeared on Jon Rothstein’s podcast this week and spoke about this year’s team. He was talking about Jaden Akins and Rothstein asked what he realistically expects from his sophomore guard this year.

“When he is fully healthy, and when he is obviously part of the lineup, what type of a jump is realistic for Jaden Akins?” Rothstein asked Izzo.

Izzo was not shy with what we sees from Akins.

“I think monster jump. I really do,” Izzo said. “The kid is my best student. He’s my best, hardest worker. He’s gained about 10-12 pounds. He is the best athlete on my team and one of the best defenders.”

The Hall of Fame head coach went on to say that he probably should have played Akins a little more last year. He isn’t wrong.

A healthy Akins changes Michigan State basketball

Akins is one of the best players on the team and when he’s back and healthy, he’s going to have a breakout season. Like Izzo said, he probably should have played more last year, but this is going to be his year to break out.

The playing time will be there for Akins and the team could use some extra defending on the wing and athleticism around the rim.

If there’s one player who is looking like a lock to break out this year as long as he remains healthy, it has to be Akins. And when Izzo is bragging about him and hyping him up, you know there’s some fire with this smoke.
