Angelo Grose is heading into his junior year with elevated expectations with Michigan State football. He’s on the verge of a breakout.

The 2021 season was forgettable for almost every member of the Michigan State football secondary.

Angelo Grose had a “career year” however.

On paper, he put together the best season of his young career which wasn’t surprising because he was playing in his first full season as a starter since coming to East Lansing. He played in six games in 2020, recording 23 tackles, 0.5 tackles for loss, two pass breakups, and a forced fumble. He was a rising star at cornerback and showed the ability to make open-field tackles.

Grose’s numbers all improved in 2021 as he finished with 81 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, an interception, five pass breakups, and a forced fumble. His ability to make plays in the open field really carried him but his pass coverage could have used some work.

An injury did slow his growth and his move to safety may have also been a major adjustment.

While his numbers looked solid, he’d be the first to tell you that he fell short of his own expectations and he’s worked hard with Xavier Henderson this offseason to fix that.

The duo of Henderson and Grose is going to cause problems for opposing defenses with another year of playing together and because both are incredibly aggressive and not afraid to step up and make a play. They’re going to feed off each other and this second year of playing with Henderson is going to turn Grose into a more vocal leader.

When Henderson leaves, Grose will step up and become that leader.

For now, however, Grose’s play will take that next step first. He’s going to learn from his up-and-down 2021 season and begin his rise to stardom in 2022.

If you’re looking for a defensive back to buy stock in, Grose is your guy.
