Michigan State football tight end Maliq Carr has taken the necessary steps to become a star in the green and white at the position.

Maliq Carr transferred to Michigan State football from Purdue as a wide receiver and the coaching staff immediately felt like a change was needed.

The former four-star high school prospect who considered the Spartans before heading to Purdue was built like a tight end at 6-foot-5 and 245 pounds but he wanted to give wideout a try. He wanted to focus more on catching passes than trying to crack down and block opposing defensive ends. He wanted to focus on blocking on the outside against corners who he knew he could handle.

That led to his position change setting him back a bit. He didn’t play a ton in his first season with the Spartans in 2021, catching eight passes for 135 yards.

Many were worried that he wasn’t a willing blocker and that may have led to someone like Tyler Hunt seeing the field more than him despite Carr being a more talented pass-catcher and better overall athlete.

It seems like that’s about to change. Carr knows that his NFL future depends on him becoming a willing blocker and he’s taken that next step this offseason, according to Ted Gilmore.

Gilmore went on to tell the media that Carr is “100 percent” improved in the blocking department which would be a massive development. If he can prove to be an effective blocker, he will also have the opportunity to catch a ton of passes and stay on the field. He’s a matchup nightmare for linebackers so he could put up big numbers.

Daniel Barker transferring in may have pushed him here and with Hunt nipping on his heels, he feels the pressure to be better, and he’s responding.
