Michigan State Football: Where have 2022 undrafted free agents signed?
Michigan State football had a number of players go undrafted but a good portion of them have signed with NFL teams as undrafted free agents.
The 2022 NFL Draft is in the books and, unlike last year, Michigan State football saw some players get drafted. A lengthy draft streak was broken last year as no Spartans heard their names called, but that changed this season as a new streak has begun.
Four Spartans were selected and all were on the offensive side of the ball.
Kenneth Walker III went No. 41 overall to the Seahawks in round two, Jalen Nailor went No. 191 overall in the sixth round to the Vikings, Connor Heyward went No. 208 in the sixth round to the Steelers, and AJ Arcuri went at No. 261 overall to the defending Super Bowl champion Rams.
The first three were expected to be drafted, but I’m not sure anyone saw Arcuri being selected.
But there were still some big names who didn’t get drafted and ended up signing on as undrafted free agents with NFL teams shortly after.
Who are they and where did they land?
Matt Coghlin, K — Chicago Bears
The multi-year starter at placekicker for the Spartans had an up-and-down career that ended with some injuries. He was clearly hampered in 2021 and that led to some struggles, but he’s looking to make an impression with the Bears.
Jacub Panasiuk, DE — Washington Commanders
If there was a fifth Spartan to be drafted, I would have guessed that it would have been Jacub Panasiuk but he didn’t hear his name called and signed with Washington shortly after. He had the best season of his career in 2021 and made a name for himself and it wouldn’t shock me if he impressed in minicamp.
Kevin Jarvis, OL — Detroit Lions
Kevin Jarvis was picked up by the Detroit Lions which will make a good number of Spartan fans happy. He always showed a ton of promise at Michigan State and it always felt like his potential was through the roof. If he can stay healthy and play to his potential this offseason, he may sneak onto the roster.
Anthony Russo, QB — Carolina Panthers
Although he didn’t play much in the green and white, Anthony Russo was neck-and-neck with Payton Thorne in the quarterback battle last fall. He is getting a chance to prove himself once again with the Panthers and they desperately need help at quarterback.
