Michigan State Football: 3 offensive breakout candidates for spring 2022
Michigan State football heads into spring ball with some potential breakout candidates. Who could become household names for the Spartans?
With the basketball team’s run in the NCAA Tournament coming to an end this past weekend, it’s time to focus on Michigan State football’s spring practices and outlook.
The Spartans are fresh off an 11-2 season which concluded with a Peach Bowl win in Mel Tucker’s second year. He’s now entering his third season with plenty of expectations and a positive outlook with a team that might be projected to begin 2022 in the top 15.
Before that can happen, the Spartans must find some breakout players to step up at key positions this spring.
Which underrated offensive players could break out this spring?
We heard about Geno VanDeMark during bowl season as he was standing out during the practices that led up to the Peach Bowl and I think that’s a good sign heading into this spring.
VanDeMark was one of the top recruits in Michigan State’s 2021 class and he was expected to come in and earn a starting spot on the line within his first few years. With Michigan State’s line struggling in 2021, it’ll be interesting to see if he can steal a starting job away from a vet.
The Spartans bring back Jarrett Horst, Matt Carrick, JD Duplain, Nick Samac, and Spencer Brown who could round out the starting group, but I wouldn’t be shocked to see VanDeMark take over one of the spots on the interior (potentially for Carrick who is coming off an injury). Brian Greene is transferring in from Washington State, but he won’t be on campus until summer so this is an opportunity for VanDeMark to prove himself.
VanDeMark has the potential to be a key contributor and it starts with a strong spring.
