National Signing Day is officially in the books and Michigan State football has a better idea of what the depth chart will look like for 2022.

National Signing Day was relatively uneventful for Mel Tucker and Michigan State football as they avoided any drama like last year when Rayshaun Benny flipped to Michigan.

Uneventful isn’t a bad thing although fans are hoping to be in the running for some big names on future signing days. Not losing anyone and actually gaining four-star wideout Germie Bernard right before signing day made up for the lack of excitement.

But with the class all sewn up outside of some post-spring attrition and potential transfer portal additions, we have a better grasp of what the depth chart will look like in 2022.

Offensive Line

Starting tackles: Jarrett Horst, Spencer Brown
Backups: Brandon Baldwin, Geno VanDeMark

Jarrett Horst announced his return on social media shortly after the season and that’s great news because the line could use him at tackle. They struggled without him at the end of the 2021 season and he’ll lock down the left tackle spot. Joining him on the other side will be Spencer Brown who played well in the Peach Bowl. At the very least, he got some valuable experience.

Behind them, I think we’ll see JUCO transfer Brandon Baldwin who didn’t get much run last season but he is a big body with potential. And I also like Geno VanDeMark at tackle but he’ll be all over that line. He’s going to be an All-Big Ten player by the time he’s a junior or senior.

Starting guards: JD Duplain, Geno VanDeMark
Backups: Matt Carrick, Ethan Boyd

JD Duplain returns and he’ll be solid on the interior and I’d be tempted to project Matt Carrick as a starter, but we just don’t know what type of player we’ll be getting back after a season-ending injury. I’m extremely high on VanDeMark, so I’m going with him as the start on the opposite side but Carrick will play a ton.

Behind those three, I see Ethan Boyd having an impact.

Starting center: Nick Samac
Backup: Dallas Fincher

Nick Samac returning at center is great for the line because he was better than Matt Allen last season. I could see Dallas Fincher backing him up and potentially even push for that starting job by the end of the year.
