Michigan State women’s basketball shocks No. 4 Michigan in huge upset
By Gavin Kozlo
The unranked Michigan State women’s basketball team defeated the No. 4 Michigan Wolverines in epic fashion on Thursday night.
The Michigan State women’s basketball team played one of their toughest matchups all year. Not only was it against rival Michigan but it was also a battle between a 20-2 Wolverine team which is currently ranked fourth in the nation.
But the women’s team put up a strong fight and did not let the Wolverines best them.
The Spartans defeated Michigan 63-57 in a hard-fought game. There was not a lot of hype surrounding the game as there normally was because Michigan is a top-ranked school while the Spartans are unranked but that did not bother them at all. Especially one Spartan: Nia Clouden.
Nia played all 40 minutes of this game, becoming the definition of “playing until the final whistle” and she did not disappoint. She finished the game with 20 points, four rebounds, and two assists. Of course, Nia was the leading scorer for the team and was the key factor in this win.
But she didn’t do this alone. Teammate DeeDee Hagmann also played a major part in their success.
DeeDee played 38 minutes and nearly got a triple-double. She ended the game with, nine points, seven rebounds, and nine assists. Her collaboration with Nia was the major connection and the right two people the Spartans needed to get them over the hump to beat such a good Michigan team.
This was the first time in over three years that the women’s basketball team beat an AP top-five team. The last win came against Oregon in 2018 where the Spartans won 88-82. This game also snapped a three-game losing streak against the Wolverines.
So all in all, this game was amazing for the morale of the team and fans all around. It was a very exciting game to watch and it will be exciting to see what else the future holds for this team as the season draws closer to an end.
