Mel Tucker added another transfer portal player on Tuesday as Georgia cornerback Ameer Speed committed to Michigan State football.

For the second time in as many years, Mel Tucker added a transfer from the portal who was once highly-recruited by Michigan State football during the Mark Dantonio days.

Last year, it was Harold Joiner who joined the Spartans and this time around, it’s Ameer Speed, a former three-star cornerback from Jacksonville, Fla. If the name sounds familiar, that’s because Dantonio made him a priority in the 2017 class before he committed to Georgia.

Speed even took an official visit to Michigan State before committing to Georgia and Harlon Barnett paid him an in-home visit back in 2017 as well.

Now, Barnett gets to coach the player who was once a top priority for him as Speed committed to Michigan State on Tuesday afternoon after spending just a week in the transfer portal.

What attracted Michigan State to him back in 2017 was his size and his ability to be a lockdown corner with that length. He is undoubtedly going to boost that secondary which ranked last in college football this season.

Ameer Speed is just what Michigan State football needed

Anyone who has followed the Spartans in the transfer portal thus far has seen them address some important positions like linebacker, defensive line, and running back, but with just a handful of spots remaining, it felt like the staff needed to focus on defensive backs and offensive linemen.

Speed is just what the doctor ordered as he entered the portal last week and Tucker immediately made him a priority. He was one of the best defensive backs on the market.

Michigan State’s secondary can’t get much worse and adding a player who started three games to start the season on one of the best defenses in recent memory which went on to win a national title is only going to speed up the improvement.

As a 6-3, 200-pound cornerback, he’ll have the chance to compete for a starting job right away and he adds valuable depth either way.

Instant impact additions are always welcome.
