Pitt offensive coordinator Mark Whipple just resigned and won’t coach in the Peach Bowl which is good news for Michigan State football.

Heading into a Peach Bowl matchup against one of the top offenses in the country, Michigan State football could use all of the help it can get.

The Panthers boast a Heisman finalist at quarterback in Kenny Pickett who leads an offense that accounts for over 500 yards per game.

Michigan State fans know how much pain this could mean for the 130th-ranked pass defense. All the Spartans need is a break.

On Tuesday afternoon, Pitt offensive coordinator Mark Whipple resigned, giving Michigan State the break it needed and a slight advantage as the Panthers will be playing in a Peach Bowl without one of the driving forces that helped get them there calling the plays.

What makes this even more intriguing for Michigan State is the fact that Pickett and Whipple are very close and this might lead to the senior quarterback sitting out the Peach Bowl (hopefully not for viewership sake) in order to prepare for the NFL draft.

Obviously this is all speculation, but losing your offensive coordinator before a bowl game that’s not a national semifinal doesn’t seem worth putting your health on the line as a top quarterback prospect.

A full-strength battle would obviously be more fun, but this Whipple news is only going to help Michigan State’s chances as he was one of the nation’s top coordinators.

Whipple had apparently been vying for the Nebraska offensive coordinator job which may have led to this sudden resignation.

This is great news for Michigan State’s 130th-ranked pass defense.
