With all the excitement over football season and Mel Tucker’s 8-1 start, we’ve almost forgotten that Michigan State basketball season is about to tip off.

The Spartans open the 2021-22 season on Tuesday night against Kansas as it will be one of the best games of the early season. It’s also a prime opportunity for Michigan State to prove itself after failing to make the preseason AP Top 25. Kansas, on the other hand, is a top-five team and a national title favorite.

Michigan State’s Champions Classic performance may tell us all we need to know about this year’s team. Will it be able to hang with the nation’s elite? Will the Spartans be undermanned? Will there be enough leaders to carry this team to the promised land?

After the Champions Classic, things don’t get much easier for the Spartans, however. They will travel to Butler the following week and then face Loyola Chicago in the Battle 4 Atlantis along with possibly Auburn or UConn and Baylor or Arizona State or Syracuse or VCU. After that, it’s the Big Ten/ACC Challenge with Louisville coming to town.

There are opportunities for this team to prove itself but this could also be a rough start to the year but either way, there’s a feeling that this year’s team is only going to get better throughout.

What will the starting lineup look like when the season begins against No. 3 Kansas?
