Mel Tucker wants his team to go 1-0 every week and there may never be a more important week for Michigan State football up to this point than the Rutgers game.

Nebraska was big, Miami was also important, but beating Rutgers on the road would make a statement and it’ll show that the Spartans are legit contenders in the Big Ten this season.

Last season left a bad taste in Tucker’s mouth after losing to Rutgers, but there’s a different feeling around the program in 2021.

Here’s why I believe the Spartans will get revenge on the Scarlet Knights.

3. Michigan State will win the turnover battle

Turnovers were the theme of last year’s game between these two teams and while they might be the theme again, it will be for a different reason.

Michigan State is going to win the turnover battle this year and it’s going to be a major difference in this season’s matchup. Noah Vedral is going to throw a big pick and the Scarlet Knights are going to cough up a fumble in the first half which will swing the momentum in this one.

Payton Thorne has been very smart with the ball this season and hasn’t forced too many throws which is why he has 11 touchdown passes to just one interception. He’s going to stay turnover-free on Saturday afternoon and the Spartans won’t lose any fumbles either, leading to a much cleaner performance against the Scarlet Knights this time around.

Winning the turnover battle usually leads to winning the game.
