Do you feel that? It feels like a momentum shift in the state of Michigan when it comes to recruiting.

Michigan State football just picked up a commitment from four-star athlete Dillon Tatum on Wednesday evening as he chose the Spartans over in-state rival Michigan as well as Tennessee and Iowa who made late surges.

With the commitment, Michigan State now has four of the top nine prospects from the state of Michigan in the 2022 class and the only other school with more than one is Notre Dame which has two. Michigan has the No. 1 in-state prospect (Will Johnson) while the Spartans now have four four-stars in Alex VanSumeren, Antonio Gates Jr., Jaden Mangham, and now Tatum.

The tides seem to be changing under Mel Tucker.

This is an especially impressive recruiting win given the fact that Michigan hired Tatum’s high school coach Ron Bellamy in the offseason and yet he still fell in love with the Spartans’ staff.

Also, the 4-0 start and No. 17 national ranking probably helped, but Tucker may have won in this recruiting battle without that red-hot start to the 2021 season.

Tatum is ranked the No. 265 overall prospect and 13th-best athlete in the composite and it looks like he’s projected to play defensive back at Michigan State. He’s now the Spartans’ third-highest ranked composite commitment.

Michigan State football’s class looks top 25-worthy

If you would have told me a year ago that Tucker would have a top 25 recruiting class in his first full cycle, I would have called you crazy. He is now on the verge of just that.

The Spartans now have five four-star commitments which is four more than they had in last year’s cycle (depending on which site you use) and they’re trending in the right direction. Michigan State should move up 2-3 spots after Tatum’s commitment to No. 17 or No. 18 in the 2022 cycle and just imagine how the class will look with Kiyaunta Goodwin and Armani Winfield flipping.

Tuck comin’.
