Michigan State Football: 3 bold predictions vs. Northwestern in opener
1. Michigan State leads the entire way
Leading a game as the underdog for the entirety is an impressive feat, but that’s exactly what Michigan State will do on Friday night en route to its first win of the year.
Kenneth Walker III is going to kick Michigan State’s season off with a first-quarter touchdown and then Matt Coghlin will add a field goal in the second quarter before a Northwestern touchdown. After that, Michigan State will kick another field goal right before the half to take a 13-7 lead into the locker room.
The Spartans will score first in the second half on a Payton Thorne touchdown pass to Jalen Nailor to make it 20-7 before the Wildcats add a couple of field goals to pull within a score. Michigan State will score on a Thorne touchdown pass to Reed in one of those hometown connections to really cement the victory, although Northwestern will make things interesting late.
Down 27-13, the Wildcats will kick a field goal in the third to pull within 11 and then score a touchdown midway through the fourth to make it a four-point game.
Michigan State will run out the clock and seal a big win to start Mel Tucker’s second year.
