Tuesday was final cut day for many NFL teams as they set their NFL rosters for the 2021 season. Former Michigan State football star Malik McDowell who has been out of the league for about four years was the feel-good story of the day, making the Browns’ 53-man roster.

McDowell wasn’t the only former Spartan on the fringe to make a roster, however.

In fact, a handful of other Spartans made the cut and although Brian Lewerke wasn’t one of them with the Giants, there were other guys you had to feel good about.

Josiah Scott was a name that had been on the fringe with the Eagles since being dealt by the Jaguars to Philadelphia this offseason and he did just enough in the preseason to make the cut.

Scott apparently grew up as an Eagles fan so this is especially big for him as he gets to represent the team he grew up rooting for as one of the five cornerbacks on the final roster.

In just six career games with the Jaguars after being selected in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Scott recorded 11 total tackles and a tackle for loss. He had an impressive Michigan State career that led to him being a potential regular member of the Jaguars’ cornerback rotation.

Then the Eagles picked him up and many were unsure if he’d make the cut after preseason ball.

Good opportunity for Josiah Scott

Scott was one of those underrated three-star recruits out of high school that Mark Dantonio recruited as a diamond in the rough. He turned out to be an All-Big Ten performer and had a heck of a career before leaving a year early for the NFL. He knows what it takes to exceed expectations and make a name for himself.

He now has a chance to do that in Philadelphia.

With only five cornerbacks on the active roster, Scott has a good opportunity in front of him to make some noise this season and join that regular playing rotation. He has the tools, he just needs to get his confidence back after being on the fringe for a while.
