If not for an injury, we may not have had Ronald Williams in East Lansing with Michigan State football for the 2021 season.

It’s crazy how it all works out, but Williams spoke to the media on Thursday and spoke about his time at Alabama which was almost a little more special, and his position change at the JUCO level which landed him in the position to be recruited by Nick Saban.

Williams said that he was always a quarterback but made the change to cornerback in junior college and it worked out as he became one of the best at the position at that level.

He committed to Alabama ahead of the 2020 season and was making a major impact ahead until he suffered a broken arm in practice after moving up to the first unit.

And it was who he was covering when it happened that should have MSU fans excited about his potential. He was facing off against Heisman winner DeVonta Smith.

Anyone who was concerned about Michigan State’s secondary heading into this season is probably stepping off the ledge now after realizing just how special Williams might just be in East Lansing. He was nearly a starter at Alabama with Patrick Surtain II and Josh Jobe on the roster and he got to practice against the Heisman winner.

Williams knows talent and he doesn’t shy away from the big stage, obviously.

Williams credits Michigan State football’s development

As you can see from the quote above, Williams chose to transfer to Michigan State because he said that the defensive back development was on par with Alabama. That’s some high praise.

Williams clearly thinks very highly of Mel Tucker and Harlon Barnett and it seems as if he’s bought into the system already as he looks like a projected starter at cornerback.

Imagine if he never got hurt last season, we could be talking about him as an NFL rookie right now after getting drafted early.

Michigan State nearly missed out on this special talent.
