Michigan State Football: 3 summer enrollees who could start in 2021

A drastic roster flip has taken place this offseason as Mel Tucker has lost upwards of 20 players to the portal while bringing in 15 new transfers of his own.

Michigan State football went from a team filled with MAC talent to one that’s bringing in SEC and ACC players and guys who would start just about everywhere outside of the programs they transferred from. Heck, some of these guys were starters before deciding to transfer.

The Spartans look like a team that could make a bowl game with all of the positive roster turnover and it would be somewhat of a disappointment if they didn’t win 6-7 games.

Expectations are on the rise and Michigan State has some summer enrollees who could really make an impact in 2021 and crack the starting lineup.

I’ll admit, I’m very high on Maliq Carr, probably because I wanted Mark Dantonio to recruit him out of high school and he let him slip to Purdue.

Carr was a top-200 recruit in the 2020 class and was listed as a receiver for the Boilermakers last year but didn’t. see the field. He redshirted and now has an opportunity to crack Michigan State’s two-deep, but maybe not even at the receiver position. There’s a good chance we’ll see Carr at tight end this fall, as evidenced by a picture with Ted Gilmore’s group.

Even if he does stay at receiver, Michigan State could use a big playmaker like him to fill the void of Tre’Von Morgan. But if he’s a tight end, there’s a chance he could push Trenton Gillison for the starting job.

With Matt Dotson graduating, there’s a void at the position and Gillison hasn’t locked up the starting job just yet while Tyler Hunt, Kameron Allen, and Adam Berghorst are also fighting for that job. Adding Carr to the mix makes things more interesting because he has receiver skills and athleticism and a big frame to fit the tight end position.
