Mel Tucker’s first spring game is finally here. After a nightmare of an offseason last year with COVID-19 ravaging the nation, Michigan State football finally gets its first taste of a Tucker spring.

The Spartans have stayed healthy for the most part and the excitement around the football program right now is palpable. Not only is Tucker selling hype to potential newcomers, but he’s also selling it to fans. After dark days since the 2017 season, all hope for Michigan State football seemed to be lost.

But since Tucker has been in town, it’s been restored. Despite a 2-5 first season, the new head coach delivered a couple of ranked wins, including a victory over Michigan on the road.

Now he heads into the spring game with some serious position battles brewing which is only going to make the depth chart better heading into 2021. Which position battles should all fans be watching during Saturday’s spring game?

3. Tight end

This isn’t going to be the most intriguing thing to watch during the spring game, but Michigan State is going to have some dogs battling it out for the No. 1 spot in the fall.

The early favorite has to be Trenton Gillison after Matt Dotson’s retirement. He came to Michigan State as a four-star recruit but hasn’t quite lived up to the billing just yet. He has all the physical tools but he needs to become a better blocker before winning the job outright.

A surprising name to watch is Kameron Allen, an early enrollee freshman. He has been dubbed a leader in the tight end room already and many believe he could break out this year.

Tyler Hunt, a converted punter, will be an option as well. He looked solid last season in limited action and he might be one of the bigger surprises.

Don’t sleep on Tommy Guajardo or Adam Berghorst either. Both of those guys have been waiting for their opportunities and now that Dotson has moved on, the position is wide open.
