Michigan State football expected to land Purdue WR transfer Maliq Carr
When Mel Tucker said that he and his staff will recruit as hard as anyone in the country, he wasn’t lying. When he said that if you can’t recruit at Michigan State, you probably can’t recruit, it was met with a lot of raised eyebrows, but he’s proving that to be true.
On Thursday afternoon, Michigan State was the beneficiary of another transfer rumor.
We’ve been hearing all offseason that Tucker wants to take advantage of the portal and he’s doing much more of that than Mark Dantonio ever did — although the portal is much more prominent now than it ever was in the Dantonio era.
One thing Dantonio didn’t do, though, was keep Maliq Carr in the state of Michigan.
Rumors are swirling about the Purdue freshman’s entrance into the transfer portal and likely choice of Michigan State as his new home. Dantonio lost him and Tucker brought him back.
If these rumors are true, Michigan State just landed another two-sport star who could bolster that receiving corps and also aid the basketball team.
Carr is a 6-foot-4, 230-pound receiver who will likely play a little shooting guard or small forward at the collegiate level and you can bet Tom Izzo will welcome another wing.
Michigan State football becoming ‘Transfer Portal U’
The transfer has yet to become official, but if the reporting on this from Tom Dienhart is accurate (which it probably is), then Michigan State just landed one of the top young players in the Big Ten.
Carr was ranked the No. 126 recruit in the 2020 class and he was Michigan’s No. 3 prospect, according to 247Sports. The Oak Park-native could open up that pipeline for Michigan State and the talent coming from that school has been top-tier for years.
With the news of this likely transfer, Michigan State will have landed a dozen players in the portal which is one of the highest numbers in the nation. And they’re not just backup options, either. No, the Spartans are landing potential starters and immediate impact players at just about every position as Tucker continues to build and mold the roster.
Guys like Kenneth Walker III, Anthony Russo, Harold Joiner, Jarrett Horst, Itayvion Brown, Christian Fitzpatrick, and Drew Jordan could all start from day one and now Carr joins that mix.
If you’re a highly-touted transfer, Tucker is probably coming for you.
