From the opening tip, Michigan State basketball signee Pierre Brooks looked comfortable.

The Detroit Douglass senior looked like he was made for the moment. He didn’t crumble under the bright lights at Breslin Center in the Division 4 state championship game on Saturday morning, dazzling spectators for four quarters.

After an interesting tweet surfaced from a local journalist earlier this week, stating that Brooks was undersized, looked disinterested on defense and his teammates didn’t like passing him the ball, he silenced that emphatically with a dominant performance in the state title game against Wyoming Tri-Unity.

Brooks was the co-leading scorer for Douglass in the win, bringing home a state championship and excelling on both ends of the floor.

Not only was he scoring at will and really showing how comfortable he could be at Breslin, but he was also playing great defense.

Coming in with the 2021 recruiting class, Brooks has arguably been the least-talked-about incoming freshman for Tom Izzo and the Spartans. Max Christie is a McDonald’s All-American, Jaden Akins is considered by some to be Izzo’s most athletic point guard signee ever, and (barring a reclassification) Emoni Bates could be the top recruit to ever play for Michigan State.

Brooks has gotten lost in the mix. But that’s changed over the past couple of months as he has dominated the prep ranks in the state of Michigan and looks to be the favorite to win Mr. Basketball.

The Douglass senior has gone from overlooked and underappreciated to the gem of the class in a matter of a couple of months.

Highlights from the Michigan State basketball signee’s dominance

Don’t believe me that he turned heads in the state title game? I have highlights to prove it.

This first one shows his range and confidence. Brooks knocked down a 3-pointer right before halftime from the Spartan logo.

This next play is a nifty step-back 3-pointer that, I agree, we should be seeing a lot of in the coming years.

Seems disinterested in defense? These next two highlights say otherwise.

As fellow MSU J-School grad (class of 1962) and loyal Spartan Avenue reader Jay Blissick told me, Brooks is ending his high school career right where his college career is set to begin. Poetic indeed.

Next. 5 potential eventual replacements for Tom Izzo. dark
