Michigan State football landed a familiar name in the transfer portal in former Michigan linebacker Ben VanSumeren on Saturday afternoon.

Mel Tucker has kept his promise: he’s working hard in the transfer portal. Just weeks after saying he’s not even close to being done in the transfer portal, he added a familiar face in former Michigan linebacker Ben VanSumeren.

Although he didn’t see the field much in his three years at Michigan, he was buried behind some talented linebackers. The former three-star recruit from Bay City, Mich., had just eight career tackles.

Entering the transfer portal this offseason, there was talk that Tucker and the Spartans were in close contact, especially considering his brother is a top 2022 target.

On Saturday, VanSumeren made it official and Michigan fans did not like the move.

VanSumeren probably didn’t make too many people in Ann Arbor happy with the move but he had to do what was best for him and Michigan State needs linebackers. On top of that, his brother is very interested in Michigan State and they may just be a package deal in the end.

The Spartans are still looking to add linebackers in the transfer portal so VanSumeren may not be the final piece here but he’s a good start. Michigan State should be keeping an eye on Alabama transfer Ale Kaho and USC transfer Palaie Gaoteote. These two could still be top targets moving forward, but VanSumeren brings much-needed experience.

Hopefully this is a move that will pay off both immediately on the field and in the 2022 recruiting class.
