Michigan State basketball coach Tom Izzo needs to look himself in the mirror after inexplicably losing a commitment from Enoch Boakye.

Coaching gaffes and mistakes have been the theme of the 2020-21 season for Michigan State basketball and Tom Izzo took that one step further on Monday morning.

After landing Enoch Boakye, a five-star 2022 center from Canada, over the summer, the big man de-committed on Monday citing “too many players coming back” for his main reason. He claimed he wanted to go somewhere he can have an impact immediately.

And that statement had Spartan fans everywhere scratching their heads because, well, he would have had an immediate impact in East Lansing next season — or at least he should have.

There was a good chance Boakye would have reclassified to join the 2021 class and with Michigan State struggling in the post this season, it would have been the perfect situation for the Spartans. He would have come in and played immediately, pushing guys like Marcus Bingham Jr., Thomas Kithier, Julius Marble and Mady Sissoko for minutes.

But Izzo sat back and let Boakye de-commit, knowing what his concerns where — presumably. And he did nothing to ease his concerns which is criminal.

Izzo should know that there are a couple of guys who probably should be looking at different programs this offseason if they want minutes next year. Kithier is one of those guys and the fact that he’s getting 10-15 minutes per game despite being a major liability on both ends is one of the reasons Boakye de-committed even though he didn’t come right out and say it.

The Hall of Fame head coach hasn’t been playing his best guys in the post and the fact that Boakye feels that they will be back next year and probably steal minutes is concerning.

Michigan State has major post issues. Boakye knows that but he also has seen Izzo give minutes to guys who shouldn’t be getting them while dudes with high ceilings like Sissoko and Bingham Jr. are riding the bench more often than not. He doesn’t want to be in that boat.

You can’t knock Enoch for his decision because this entire season wouldn’t have eased his concerns. Izzo has mismanaged the post and it looks like he may have to continue to do so next season with no Boakye coming in.

It’s time for Izzo to look in the mirror and realize he’s making a mistake by letting Boakye walk and it’s because of what he’s been doing.

I don’t often knock Izzo, but this one is entirely on him and he needs to wake up before it’s too late.
