Michigan State basketball needed to piece together a winning streak in the worst way and it did just that with a huge win over Rutgers.

In a game Michigan State needed to win in order to make a statement in the Big Ten race, the Spartans played tough defense en route to a 68-45 blowout of No. 16 Rutgers.

While wins over Rutgers in basketball or football haven’t been considered “huge” over the years, this season’s Scarlet Knight squad is impressive. The trend for the Rutgers basketball program has been alarming for the rest of the Big Ten because it won’t be long before this team is hoisting a regular season conference crown.

But Michigan State reminded them that it’s still the big kid on the block on Tuesday night in a ranked battle. The Spartans just wanted a win and they got a blowout.

The Spartans did shoot 46 percent from the floor and 39 percent from deep, but defense was the name of the game.

Now only if Izzo can get Joey Hauser, Rocket Watts, Aaron Henry and Josh Langford all going at the same time.

What’d we learn from this mammoth MSU victory?
