Michigan State basketball had a scare against Detroit Mercy on Friday and will get a chance to make up for it on Sunday against Western Michigan.

Friday was a forgettable day for Michigan State basketball. The Spartans had a tough time with an otherwise mediocre foe in Detroit Mercy, needing to pull away in the final minutes to come away with an 83-76 win. Two days later, the Spartans are taking on Western Michigan.

Michigan State is 4-0 on the season and a comfortable win over Western would be enough to give the Spartans momentum heading into the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Wednesday against Virginia.

Western has played just one game this season, losing to Butler on Nov. 25 so there could be some rust there with 10 days passing since the Broncos’ last game.

What could take place in Sunday’s matchup?

3. Gabe Brown scores 20 off the bench

Coming off his best game of the season, Gabe Brown is feeling good, scoring 16 points with two blocks on 66 percent shooting. He’s got his confidence back and he’s shooting at a high level this year, making 45 percent of his shots from 3-point range and 50 percent from the floor.

How does he follow up his best game of the season? With another best, of course.

Brown will come off the bench, play another 30 minutes and score 20 points. He’s going to be that spark for the Spartans against Western and this might just be the start of his rise to stardom in East Lansing.
