The 2020 Michigan State football season is already upon us and the Spartan Avenue staff gives their best final record predictions.

Michigan State football is back, folks. No, we won’t be able to enjoy fall Saturdays in East Lansing with the smell of hot dogs and cigars filling the air, but the anxiety won’t disappear.

There’s a new era of football at Michigan State with Mark Dantonio suddenly retiring and Mel Tucker taking over and while there’s plenty of uncertainty surrounding the program’s transition period, there is also excitement.

How does the Spartan Avenue staff believe Michigan State will fare in 2020?

Connor Muldowney: 4-4. I’m going with optimism here. Michigan State could very well finish 2-6 or 3-5, but the Spartans have enough talent to surprise teams and win games that they’re supposed to against Indiana, Northwestern, Maryland and Rutgers. Heck, I could even see a win over Iowa. Theo Day will get the start at quarterback and the offense will finish in the top 60 nationally. Momentum building for 2021.

Jack Williams: 4-4. This team will look better than a lot of fans an experts are predicting. They’ll still work through some growing pains with a new staff and ultimately finish the season at .500. Unlike in past years, the offense will take a huge step forward and the defense will take a small step back, creating a more balanced game in East Lansing. The year will be spent searching for a new identity under Mel Tucker.

Carter Landis: 5-3. I really believe that this Michigan State team is going to overachieve. There is so much talent on paper and Mel Tucker and his staff are the perfect group of coaches to maximize it. I believe that they will win all the games they’re supposed to and one they’re not. I hope to see Tre’Von Morgan break out this year as well.

Stephen Robb: I think the Spartans end up being 3-5. That might be too optimistic given the loss of Luke Fulton. They’ll lose a game they should win this year. However they will compete with teams. This will be the silver lining for 2021 season.

What do you think Michigan State’s final record will be for 2020?
