While it’s not a given right now, the Big Ten could opt to play this fall. And if that does happen, here’s who’ll lead Michigan State football, stat-wise.

Will there be a Big Ten season or won’t there be one? That’s the question on everyone’s minds heading into the second week of the regular season of college football. Every Big Ten fan is waiting to hear some news from the conference’s 14 school presidents and commissioner Kevin Warren, but mum has been the word.

Michigan State would benefit from having another year to prepare under first-year head coach Mel Tucker, but the Spartans could also progress quicker on and off the field if the season kicks off this fall.

The Spartans’ cupboard isn’t entirely bare, but they have some work to do before they’re going to be competing for anything any time soon. They have some key returning pieces both on defense, in the receiving corps and in the backfield while the quarterback situation, defensive line, linebacking corps and offensive line could all use some work.

Tucker has assembled an impressive staff of coaches that can recruit as well as develop players. Some guys are unproven but have incredible potential while others have shown they can produce at the highest level (Harlon Barnett, Scottie Hazelton, Ted Gilmore, Ron Burton, Mike Tressel).

With a solid staff and a decent stable of returning players, who will lead the Spartans in each statistical category whenever the 2020 season is played?
