Michigan State Football: Brian Lewerke gets his shot with Patriots
Former Michigan State football quarterback Brian Lewerke is getting his shot with the New England Patriots as an undrafted free agent.
One of the best spots for a quarterback to land is now the new home of former Michigan State star Brian Lewerke.
On Sunday, after going undrafted, Lewerke signed with the Patriots.
Lewerke had an up-and-down career at Michigan State which started with a stellar sophomore season and that led to an injury-riddled and brutal junior year where he played hampered and lost all confidence in the process. That junior season likely ruined his draft stock as he came back as a senior and put up decent numbers, but accuracy and turnovers were the main concerns.
There was talk of him being a potential fifth-round pick, at best, but he slipped out of the draft, watching a guy like Nate Stanley go before him.
The Patriots aren’t taking a huge risk here, especially since they didn’t draft a quarterback and this may have been their plan all along — maybe not Lewerke but signing a quarterback in undrafted free agency. He will join a depth chart with Jarrett Stidham and former Spartan Brian Hoyer.
If there’s one place where he could potentially make the roster due to lack of depth at quarterback, it’s New England with Tom Brady gone.
Will he beat out Hoyer and Stidham? No, probably not, but it’ll be interesting to see how much he improves with good offensive coaching and an offensive line.
Could Lewerke be the next Spartan quarterback to succeed in the NFL?
