Mel Tucker finally landed his first commitment as Michigan State football coach in the form of three-star running back Davion Primm.

We no longer have to hear about how Mel Tucker has yet to land a single recruit in the 2021 class as the first-year head coach reeled in three-star Oak Park, Mich., running back Davion Primm.

Primm becomes the first commitment in the Tucker era and that’s a big deal because it could lead to more kids jumping on board, like teammate and four-star offensive tackle Rayshaun Benny. This could be just what other recruits needed to see happen.

Michigan State will likely take two running backs in the 2021 class, per Rivals‘ Corey Robinson, and that means the Spartans will continue to recruit Donovan Edwards.

Primms is ranked the No. 1,083 prospect and 86th-best running back in the 2021 class, according to 247Sports. He’ll join the program with Connor Heyward entering his final season and Elijah Collins entering his junior year, looking to push for some carries, but Anthony Williams Jr. and Brandon Wright will still be around.

Primm has excellent vision and burst through running lanes. He can turn a sliver of daylight into a huge gain, picking up 40-50 yard touchdowns on runs that look to be stuffed within five yards of the line of scrimmage. He makes sharp cuts, but it’s his acceleration that really opens some eyes.

While he’s not the four or five-star certain fans were hoping for to kick off the class, Primm is a solid prospect who will likely rise in the ranks before it’s all said and done. His pledge could act as a domino effect and help the Spartans land some other in-state prospects.
