Michigan State Basketball: 3 takeaways from mammoth win over Maryland
2. Cassius Winston is catching fire
There’s something different about Cassius Winston’s offense over the past three halves. Since scoring just one point in the first half against Iowa, the senior point guard has dropped 42 points in the last 60 minutes. He has been a walking heat-check, shooting 6-for-12 from the floor and 5-of-6 from 3-point range against the Terrapins.
On top of that solid shooting performance, he had six assists. His seven turnovers were not pretty, but he was forcing a little too much early and a couple were offensive fouls.
But he did have the momentum-building shot of the game from about 55 feet out at the buzzer to end the first half, giving Michigan State an 11-point lead.
That wasn’t exactly the “kill shot” he talked about after the Iowa game, but he had one of those late in the second half against the Terrapins, making a 3-pointer in the corner and getting fouled to complete a four-point play.
Winston has been on fire over the past game and a half and it seems like something has clicked as he just looks like his old self.
If he can clean up those turnovers, the Spartans are going to be scary-good in March.
