Not only did Colorado quarterback Steven Montez defend Mel Tucker for taking the Michigan State football job, he praised him as a coach.

Mel Tucker’s departure from Colorado has been well-documented and there’s been a backlash felt from the other side of the country as Buffaloes fans have taken to social media, bashing the former head coach for leaving the way he did.

No, you can’t blame a guy for wanting to make more money while also going to to a program he started his career at and one that has more resources. The ceiling for Michigan State right now is much higher than that of Colorado, and Tucker realized that, seized the opportunity and made a difficult decision to leave Boulder after one year.

Tucker knew he was going to take some flak over the move, but sometimes you just have to let it go. Colorado fans have been struggling with the coach’s decision for weeks, but one former player under Tucker has come to his defense.

Basically, Montez is using the mindset that Colorado fans need to have. If the former players are OK with his decision to better his life by doubling his salary, they should be, too. He doubled his salary and took a job with more opportunities to win at a high level.

Montez went as far as saying that he “loves” Tucker and went on to praise the staff, including offensive coordinator Jay Johnson who is now at Michigan State as well.

That’s some high praise from a future NFL quarterback who didn’t put up crazy numbers in his one year under the new staff, but stated that another year in Tucker and Johnson’s system would have benefitted him even more.

It’s nice to have the backing of a prominent former player like Montez who worked so closely with Johnson and Tucker and the fact that he’s not mad should give Colorado fans an idea of how to act.
