The month of September is upon us and Michigan State football is looking to go perfect and start Big Ten play with a 2-0 record before October.

Michigan State got off to a disappointing start to the 2019 season. No, the Spartans didn’t lose to Tulsa, nor did they come close to that, but the offense could only muster a single touchdown and four field goals to beat the Golden Hurricane while the defense added a touchdown and a safety.

Eight of Michigan State’s 28 points came from defensive scores and the rest was a product of good field position because of the defense’s dominance and ability to force turnovers.

August is in the books and the Spartan offense is hoping to leave that performance in the past and move on to a much better September. Can we expect the offense to turn a corner this month and lead the Spartans to a perfect month?

5. Defense doesn’t allow 100 yards rushing in any game

Starting things off with a not-so-bold prediction? It’s fairly bold considering the Spartans are facing a run-heavy Western Michigan team with a 1,000-yard back on the roster as well as Arizona State’s Eno Benjamin and Indiana’s Stevie Scott — two more backs who reached 1,000 yards a year ago.

But the defense will step up and carry that momentum over from the Tulsa domination, not allowing a single 100-yard game from any of the four teams on the schedule.

No, I’m not talking about a 100-yard rusher, I’m saying no single team will rush for over 100 yards against the Spartans in September and they’ll continue to be the No. 1 run defense in the country.

Not many coaches in the country can maintain this type of dominance, but Mark Dantonio is a brilliant defensive mind — and so is Mike Tressel.
